Abstract

Recent advances in biomaterials and smart implant technologies are transforming the landscape of
regenerative medicine by enabling precise, patient-specific, and biologically integrated therapeutic solutions. Biomaterials, ranging from biodegradable polymers to bioactive ceramics and metallic scaffolds, are being engineered to mimic the natural extracellular matrix and support tissue regeneration. Meanwhile, smart implants equipped with sensors, adaptive materials, and wireless
communication enable real-time physiological monitoring and controlled therapeutic delivery. This
review examines recent innovations in biomaterial design, smart implant technologies, and their
synergistic role in regenerative medicine. It highlights emerging materials such as bioresorbable composites, stimuli-responsive polymers, and bioelectronic scaffolds. Challenges related to biocompatibility, long-term stability, immune response, and ethical considerations are discussed,
along with future directions toward fully integrated, intelligent therapeutic systems that blend
biological function with digital technology.
